United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates International Literacy Day (ILD) every 8th of September each year. This year's celebration under the theme "Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies" is a clarion call for action.
This year's International Literacy Day celebration (IDL2023) is an opportune moment in joining efforts to accelerate progress towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on education and lifelong learning in building. It will also help to reflect on the role of literacy in building more inclusive, peaceful, just and sustainable societies.
In doing so, it will embrace the reciprocal relations between literacy and other areas of development: Literacy is central to the creation of such societies, while progress in other areas of development contributes to generating interest and motivation of people to acquire, use and further develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
In this year's celebration, The Deputy Minority leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and Member representing Awgu North Constituency, Rt. Hon. Mrs Jane Chinwe Eneh has called on constituents to take action in ensuring that literacy is given a priority in our society.
The Deputy Minority leader, in a media chat with JANE-CARESTV recalls that her sponsored program on "JANE CARES ADULT LITERACY EDUCATION PROGRAM" has impacted positively on the constituents, by improving the literacy quotients of learners who participated in the program.
Mrs Eneh who reiterates her commitment in giving her best at improving the welfare of her constituents, therefore call on parents, guardians, well-spirited individuals, Non-Governmental organisations, among others to take action in improving the literacy index of the society, for it is said that one day of literacy is far more better than one hundred years of illiteracy. Since no knowledge is a waste, let us endeavour to help our people in acquiring it, especially in this computer age, Mrs Eneh advises.
Stressing further, Mrs Eneh opines that for the society to curb the literacy divide which is the foundation for the United Nations' focus on human-centred recovery in bridging the gap of illiteracy amongst the children, youths and adults, we must explore technologically-based initiatives such as E-learning webinars and other app innovations that will be accessible to all learners both in the urban and rural areas.
According to her, this innovation will help immensely in closing the gap on literacy and also help in the long run to reshape future literacy teachings and learnings.
