INT'L DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD: ENUGU DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER, ENEH ADVOCATES FOR ADVANCEMENT OF GIRL CHILD DIGITAL LEARNINGS, GENDER EQUALITY, INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP FOR WOMEN

The Deputy Minority leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and Member representing Awgu North Constituency has urged for the advancement of girl child digital learnings, gender equality and inclusive leadership for women.

The International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated annually on Oct. 11, is a day set aside by the United Nations to empower and amplify the voices of young girls around the world.

This year, the theme, for the celebration, is "Our time is now — our rights, our future."

In this celebration, United Nations advocates that the fundamental human rights, safety, and education of a girl child be made priority by the society, for girls also play an integral part in the active progress of the world.

According to United Nations, girls should be given an opportunity to lead by putting them at the forefront of change efforts, hearing their voices; responding to their asks; and welcoming them in decision-making spaces - for that is one of the ways of investing in a future that believes in girls' agency.

Speaking with JANE-CARESTV during a media interactive session, the deputy minority leader agreed that "women and girls can lead us to a fairer future if we amplify their voices and recommit to working together towards building a world where every girl can lead and thrive".

"Women's rights need to be brought to par with that of men to ensure equality and justice. "Inclusive leadership will help in creating thriving democracy and equally foster catalysts of positive change in our society," Mrs suggests.

In her message to constituents, Mrs Eneh opines that the Day of the Girl Child which focuses attention on the challenges girls face, like domestic violence, education inequality, child marriage and minor abuses, is thus a clarion call for all parents and guardians, community leaders, well-spirited individuals, non-governmental organisations, civil society groups, among others to take action in advancing girl teens' digital learnings for a brighter and better future of our society.

"Records show that many girl teenagers below the age of 25 have little or no Internet access at home for learnings compared to the boys counterpart. In changing this narrative, Mrs Eneh advocates that collaborative efforts are needed to correct the imbalance in gender digital divide/gap, so that a girl child in this 21st century won't be cut-off in digital transformation."

"While the government reels out its programs to better the lives of the people, we as a people should also complement the effort of the government, by making concerted effort in investing and bettering the well-being of a girl child. "We must be intentional about this in order to achieve accelerated development in our society," Mrs Eneh stated.
