IWD 2024: ENUGU DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER, ENEH URGES CONSTITUENTS TO BE INTENTIONAL WITH THE CLARION CALL TO INVEST IN WOMEN, INSPIRE INCLUSION OF WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day, which is commemorated annually on every March 8, marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

International Women's Day 2024, under the theme "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress," is a clarion call to take a stand in being intentional with the advocacy to achieve: a gender equal world; a world free from bias, stereotypes and discrimination; a world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated.

These things are achievable if and only if we are intentional with our actions. Together, we can forge women's equality. With collective efforts, we can all #InspireInclusion, celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about discrimination, and most importantly, take action to drive gender parity.

According to Gloria Steinem, a world-renowned feminist, journalist, and activist, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.

Speaking with JANE-CARESTV on the commemoration of the International Women's Day 2924, the deputy minority leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and Member representing Awgu North Constituency, join voices with other women all over the world in calling for advocacy on a joint action in areas needing attention, haven seen that our old and cultural practices of relegation of women to the back seat have not being very helpful in the yielding of the much anticipated desired result in our societal nation-building.

These areas begging for attention, according to the United Nations, include: Investing in women as a matter of human rights issue; gender-responsive budgeting as a way of considering and analyzing the unique and diverse needs of every person for a fair distribution of resources; making investment in violence prevention a priority; prioritizing the essence of marking International Days through educating and sensitization of the public on issues of concern, mobilization of political will and resources in addressing global problems,  celebrating and reinforcing of achievements of humanity, among others.

Adding further, the deputy minority leader, who is the chairman, House Committee on children, gender affairs, and social development, urged all and sundry to make International Women's Day everybody's day and doing whatever we can to truly make a positive difference for women.

According to her, "our society can't continue to be doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. We must be intentional with the development of our society. We must introduce a change of approach in our ways of doing things. We must be intentional with the #InvestInWomen and #InspireInclusion goals. Time to get it right is now," the deputy minority leader urges constituents.
