Enugu State Governor, Dr.  Peter Mbah, on Tuesday, March 26, signed into Law the Bill that sought to upgrade the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno to a teaching university hospital status.

The governor commended the State House of Assembly for accelerating action on the processing and passage of the executive bill.

“What we have done by signing into law the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences Teaching Hospital Bill is that we now have in place a legal framework to immediately begin to put in place all that is required to upgrade SUMAS to a teaching hospital.

“This is part of our campaign promises, and we are committed to delivering on that expeditiously. We believe that the importance and significance of citing a teaching hospital in our Enugu North zone can never be lost on us.

This is in line with the priority the Mbah's administration placed on education, which has a large chunk of 33% of the state's budget.

“So, we are not going to spend any time in making sure that everything that is necessary and required to upgrade and get the teaching hospital operational is put in place,” Mbah said.

Mbah, while signing the bill into Law, pledged his administration's support to the management of the university in line with his government's philosophy and policy on education.

By this law, SUMAS can now teach medicine and allied courses unencumbered.

SUMAS is located at Igbo-Eno, near Orba, in Udenu Local Government of Enugu State. By implication, Governor Mbah extends his development agenda to every part of Enugu State, having no regard to political leanings.

Present at the signing ceremony were the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu; Secretary to Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh; Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi; SPA Legal, Osita Nnajieze, SPA Delivery, Ozed Afigbo, SSA External Relations, Uche Anichukwu; SSA New Media, Reuben Onyishi.

The management of the university comprising of the Vice Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Registrar, and the Liberarian were also present.
