The Federal Government has designated Enugu State as the South East Zonal Headquarters of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), reinforcing the state’s emerging role as a regional hub for youth development, sports advancement, and infrastructural growth. The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu, by the NIS Director General, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who led the institute’s management team.

Comrade Shaibu stated that the decision to establish the zonal headquarters in Enugu was driven by the remarkable infrastructural transformation and sports revitalization programs underway in the state. He noted that Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration has demonstrated visible commitment to sports development, infrastructural modernization, and the creation of a peaceful and investor-friendly environment suitable for talent training and institutional development.

According to him, the zonal headquarters will oversee and coordinate athletes and coaches’ development programmes across the five South East states, and will serve as a catalyst for grassroots talent discovery, capacity building, and greater national sports representation. He further highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen nationwide sports participation and revive competitive excellence.

Reacting to the development, the Deputy Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and Member representing Awgu North Constituency, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Jane C. Eneh, commended Governor Mbah for what she described as strategic and development-oriented leadership. She stated that the selection of Enugu is a clear validation of the governor’s focused investment in infrastructure and youth-focused initiatives, adding that the project will advance economic, social, and educational opportunities across the state and region.

“Enugu State continues to gain national recognition because the leadership is deliberate, forward-thinking and intentional with the development of the state,” Mrs Eneh said. “This designation strengthens our sports heritage and expands opportunities for young people across the South East. We commend Governor Mbah for steering the state on a progressive development path,” Mrs Eneh remarks.

Governor Mbah, in his response during the NIS management team's visit, expressed appreciation to the federal government for the confidence reposed in the state, assuring full institutional support for the timely take-off of the zonal headquartres. He affirmed his administration’s continued commitment to inclusive development, youth empowerment, and the revitalization of sports as a tool for economic and social growth.

The project is expected to accelerate sports innovation, expand training capacity, and boost regional representation in national and international competitions.
